As a strong low pressure system moves east across the mid-Mississippi Valley today, a threat of severe weather exists from central parts of Illinois and Indiana, southward to the Gulf Coast.

 

Timing

  • Main threat will be during the afternoon hours
  • Threat lingers until near sunset near the Indiana border

Locations Impacted

  • Highest chances of severe weather:  Charleston, Mattoon, Effingham, Flora, Olney, Lawrenceville.
  • Severe storms also possible around Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, Danville. 

What is Expected

  • Main threats:  Damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and hail at least the size of quarters.
  • Risk of tornadoes, mainly along and south of I-70.
  • There is some uncertainty in the extent of severe weather, due to the overnight thunderstorms across the region. Be sure to monitor the latest forecasts through the day.
