Heavy Rain in the Mid-Atlantic; Severe Thunderstorms in the Northern Plains; Critical Fire in the West

Locally heavy rain and flash flooding will be possible today into tonight near the Mid-Atlantic/Carolina coast. Storms with large hail and severe wind gusts are expected across parts of the central and northern Plains into the upper Mississippi Valley. December 2021 Precipitation Highlights:

December saw below normal precipitation across portions of central IL near and west of I-55, with above normal precipitation farther southeast. Parts of southeast IL saw monthly totals around 1 inch above normal, while areas along and west of the Illinois River saw deficits of half to 1 inch. Snowfall was well below normal, with only one event producing any accumulation of note, when up to 3 inches fell over northern portions of central IL on Dec. 28. Peoria had it's 3rd latest 1st measurable snowfall on Dec 28th while Springfield was tied for its 2nd latest 1st measurable snowfall on Jan 1st.

December 2021 Temperature Highlights:

Temperatures across central Illinois were 7-10 degrees warmer than normal, making it one of the warmest Decembers on record. Lincoln had its 2nd warmest December, while Peoria and Springfield had their 3rd warmest December on record.
