National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

The National Weather Service in Lincoln will be conducting a required, scheduled update to its Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) from about 7 am Tuesday, June 3, through approximately 4 pm Thursday, June 5. The NWS uses the AWIPS computer system to display and integrate weather and water information, and to send life-saving information, such as weather and water warnings, to the public.

During the time of the update, forecast operations will be conducted by our service backup offices in Chicago and St. Louis, to minimize any potential interruption to services. No impacts to our core services of forecast products and weather watches, warnings and advisories are expected during this period. However, limited impacts will occur to the following services:

  • NOAA Weather Radio: All NOAA Weather Radio transmitters operated by our office will be off the air. More details can be found at this link. The weekly alarm test, normally conducted on Wednesday mornings, will be done on Friday, June 6th, unless there is a threat of severe weather that day.

  • Forecast Recordings: We will not have the ability to update the recorded forecast and climate data, normally accessed by calling 217-732-7321, as they rely on messages created for NOAA Weather Radio.

  • Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook:  We will not have the ability to create the maps for this page. However, our backup offices will be able to issue the corresponding text product.

  • Daily Temperature and Precipitation Analysis:  Maps and tables at https://www.weather.gov/ilx/illinois-daily will not be updated.

The forecast office in Lincoln will remain open and staffed throughout this period for public and partner phone calls, and additional functions that can be completed without AWIPS.
