Overview

A low pressure system produced unseasonably high wind shear across portions of central and southeast Illinois. Numerous severe thunderstorms formed south of I-72, producing tornadoes and heavy rainfall that led to flooding. Radar estimates suggest that localized rainfall amounts as high as 5" occurred in some locations. Several tornadoes were photographed south of I-72. Tornado damage surveys from NWS Lincoln are ongoing, and this page will be updated as results are available.

The Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:

65-85 mph		 EF1
Moderate
86-110 mph		 EF2
Significant
111-135 mph		 EF3

136-165 mph		 EF4
Extreme
166-200 mph		 EF5
Catastrophic
200+ mph
ef-scale
Tornadoes that fail to impact any ratable damage indicators on the EF-Scale are rated EF-Unknown (EF-U)
