A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of interior NW California. Snow levels start around 4000 to 4500 ft Saturday night into Sunday, bringing possible impacts to the highest passes on Highway 3 and Highway 36 in Trinity County. Snow levels fall to 2000 to 2500 ft Monday night into Wednesday and could potentially be as low as 1500 ft in some areas. Many of the mountain passes could see accumulations. The valleys of Trinity County and perhaps Lake County could also see snow. If you must travel, check road conditions for any potential chain controls or road closures before leaving.
Precipitation will begin to fall across Northwest California today, expanding tonight into Sunday. A very cold system will approach the area on Monday bringing lowering snow levels and an enhancement in the shower activity. Accumulation snow will become a concern on highway passes through the day on Monday and impact all of the higher passes on 3, 36, 199, and 299 as well as possibly on highway 101 by Tuesday morning. If you must travel on Monday over the mountain passes, traveling earlier will help reduce the potential for snow accumulation on your route.
