Snow Squalls May Impact New Year's Eve Travel from the Great Lakes to the Northeast; Heavy Rain Returns to California

An Alberta clipper will bring lake effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes, with the highest snow totals downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Snow squalls may impact New Year's Eve travel during the evening and overnight hours across parts of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Northeast. High astronomical tides and a larger storm surge could cause moderate to major flooding in low lying shorelines and tidal waterways during high tides. Coastal residents should make preparations for high tide flooding.
High astronomical tides in combination with a storm surge could generate some minor coastal flooding to low lying areas along the northwest California coast and low areas around Humboldt Bay.
Now is a good time to start planning for the next storm for later this week. Rains could arrive late Wednesday into Thursday, but strong winds and heavy rains will impact NW California on Friday with stormy conditions continuing into the weekend. Small stream flooding will be possible with heavy rains.
