The year 2025 ended up being the 2nd warmest year recorded in the history of Phoenix, Arizona. Extensive missing temperature data at Yuma and El Centro precludes a definitive ranking this year. Rainfall in Phoenix for the year was slightly above average, and ranked as the 44th wettest. Yuma 2025 annual rainfall ranked as the 35th wettest. Records for Phoenix began in 1896, first taken in downtown and since moved to Sky Harbor airport in the 1950s. A La Nina pattern was prevalent early in 2025, though conditions gradually turned neutral during the spring. January 2025 was the only month of the year ranking as below average for the entire region with anomalously warm conditions quickly returning in February. Dry conditions experienced since the end of 2024 generally persisted through spring 2025 with the exception of a brief wet period in March. The 2025 summer monsoon started quite slow with thunderstorms stuck over far southern Arizona. The moisture intrusions typical for the monsoon and supportive of thunderstorm development were frequently interrupted by dry air filtering back into the region. This caused the first 2/3rds of the monsoon to be abnormally dry across much of the region. By the latter parts of the monsoon there were a few notable events including a large dust storm and flash flooding in the end of August. The most notable weather events occurred as transition events and those aided by remnant tropical moisture. This included flash flooding and severe storms at the end of September as well as early October. An unsettled weather pattern continued into mid November with more flooding and severe storms. This prolonged bout of wet weather from the end of the monsoon through autumn completely eliminated precipitation deficits accumulated through the first 8 months of the year. All told, 2025 will go down as one of the warmer years on record for the entire Southwest region with precipitation not far from the annual average.
