Heat Wave Expands to the East Coast; Flash Flooding Likely in the Central Plains into the Midwest; Severe Thunderstorms in the Northeast

Dangerous, prolonged heat is ongoing in the Mid-South to Mid-Mississippi Valley and heat expands into the Northeast for a brief period today. Widely scattered instances of flash flooding due to heavy rains are forecast from northeast Kansas to much of Indiana. The sixth tornado formed at 5:40 p.m. EDT (4:40 p.m. EST) in the southwest corner of St. Joseph County, Michigan and moved northeast for 4 miles.  It was a quarter mile wide, caused one injury as it lifted and spun a vehicle with the driver still inside, and produced F1 damage.

After a brief break over central St. Joseph County, tornado number 8 touched down in the northeast part of the county at 6:10 p.m. (5:10 p.m. EST) and headed off to the northeast for 5 miles.  It, too, was about a quarter mile wide.  (Between the birth of these two tornadoes, tornado number 7 formed in Noble County, Indiana).
