A preliminary storm damage survey by the Northern Indiana National Weather Service office indicates straight line winds of 80 to 100 mph occurred in northeastern Paulding and Northern Putnam counties in northwestern Ohio. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down over the northern half of Paulding county. In Putnam county, numerous trees were knocked down and a barn was damaged 3 miles west northwest of Continental. Although no tornado touched down in Paulding and Putnam counties, winds were greater than hurricane force.
As the storm moved northeast into southwestern Henry county, it spawned a tornado which traveled from 2 mile south of New Bavaria to 3 and a half miles east southeast of New Bavaria. The path was just under 4 miles long, with an approximate width of 50 yards.
The tornado initially touched down as an F0 tornado one half a mile southeast of the intersection of CR 16 and 226 at 620 pm EDT. It strengthened to F1 intensity a quarter of a mile southeast of the intersection of CR 15 and 226. It varied between F0 and F1 intensity along its path, eventually lifting near CR Y, between CR 121A and CR T12. Two barns were destroyed and several houses and barns received damage. Trees and power lines as well as other small structures were also damaged.
Wind speeds from an F1 tornado fall in the 73 to 112 mph range, with damage moderate. Typical F1 damage includes surface being peeled off roofs, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, moving autos pushed off roads and attached garages destroyed.
