...August 2017 Was Warm and Generally Drier Than Normal Across East
Central Florida...

The average placement of the subtropical high during the month of
August was across central and northern Florida, which led to
predominantly south to southeast winds. This brought warmer than
normal temperatures to the area and had a tendency to focus sea
breeze thunderstorm activity over the interior and along the
Interstate 4 corridor. A few tropical disturbances rounding the base
of the Atlantic high provided increased moisture and a couple of
opportunities for rain, even along the coast.

...Temperatures...

With the subtropical high located generally across central and north
Florida, winds were predominantly out of the south to southeast
during the month of August. This led to unusually warm conditions,
especially over areas that saw a lack of afternoon thunderstorms and
associated cloud cover. Persistent south to southeast flow brought
in a stream of warm and moist air off the Atlantic, which kept low
temperatures well above normal, particularity closer to the coast.

With the exception of Orlando which had an average monthly
temperature only slightly above normal, three out of the four
climate sites ranked in their respective top 10 warmest on record.
In fact, Melbourne's average monthly temperature was 2.8 degrees
above normal, making it the warmest August on record for the site.

Daily Record Temperatures for the Month:

Average temperature values for August 2017 at the four primary
climate sites across east central Florida are as follows (rankings
provided if in the top 10):

- Daytona Beach had a monthly average temperature of 83.4 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 1.9 degrees above normal. This ranks as the
5th warmest August on record, with records extending back to 1923.

- Orlando had a monthly average temperature of 83.1 degrees Fahrenheit,
which was 0.3 degrees above normal.

- Melbourne had a monthly average temperature of 84.6 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 2.8 degrees above normal. This breaks the previous
record warmest average temperature for the month of August, which was
84.2 degrees set in 2007, with records extending back to 1937.

- Vero Beach had a monthly average temperature of 83.5 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 1.8 degrees above normal. This ties 2005 for
the 3rd warmest August on record, with records extending back to
1942.

...Rainfall...

Persistent south to southeast winds during the month of August
helped to focus sea breeze thunderstorm activity across the interior
and along the Interstate 4 corridor. Lake and inland Volusia
counties were among the only areas that ended August with above
normal rainfall amounts for the month. Onshore flow kept most
coastal locations drier than usual, especially across the Space and
Treasure Coasts. A few tropical disturbances rounding the base of
the subtropical ridge provided increased moisture and opportunities
for rain, most notably on the 11th, 20th, and toward the end of the
month as an inverted trough stalled over central and south Florida.

Daily Record Rainfall for the Month: None.

August 2017 rainfall totals for the four primary climate sites across
east central Florida are as follows (ranking provided if in the top
10):

0.38 inches below normal.

- Orlando received 5.99 inches of rain for the month, which was
1.14 inches below normal.
