NOUS42 KMLB 011943 PNSMLB Public Information Statement National Weather Service Melbourne FL 243 PM EST Sun Jan 1 2017 ...December 2016 was Much Warmer and Drier Than Normal Across East Central Florida... December continued the November trend of having mostly weak cold frontal passages across east central Florida. Hence, monthly average temperatures were well above normal. Only a few of the fronts generated a significant coverage of showers and thunderstorms. This resulted in monthly rainfall totals that were well below normal at most locations. Temperatures... Winds generally veered quickly to onshore behind cold fronts during December, so cool downs were brief. A front on the 2nd produced a few days near to slightly below normal. A northerly flow dominated from the 7th to the 10th, but temperatures were still just near to slightly below normal. Another front on the 20th provided a northerly wind flow and a couple of cloudy days with temperatures near to slightly below normal. Sharply colder air swept in behind a front for the last 2 days of the month and produced the lowest monthly temperatures at all sites. The rest of the month had high temperatures in the 70s and 80s with mild low temperatures mostly in the 60s. Several warm temperature records occurred. Several sites received around one third to three quarters of an inch of rainfall as the band moved through. A slow moving front combined with sea breeze boundary interactions led to about 1.5 inches of rain on the 19th and 20th at Orlando International Airport. This skewed the monthly rainfall total there, making it close to normal, but nearby Orlando Executive airport missed out on the local heavy rain on those days and received less than one half inch of rainfall for the month. One other area that had rainfall close to normal was Vero Beach, where the airport and cooperative observer received around 2 inches of rain for the month. Otherwise, rainfall was infrequent and amounts were generally a tenth of an inch or less during the month. Most locations received less than half their monthly normal, with some only having 10-20 percent of normal.
