Share your safe place from extreme weather and hazards

Extreme weather and natural hazards can happen anywhere and anytime. Depending on where you live, work, or recreate, these can include severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis and flash floods. But have you identified a safe place in your home, workplace, or other location where you would ride out extreme weather? NOAA’s National Weather Service asks you to prepare and have a plan in place for our annual SafePlaceSelfie day on April 8, 2026.

Knowing your “safe place” is one of the most essential preparedness activities for saving your life from extreme weather. Become familiar now with the hazards that could impact you and learn where the safest places and evacuation routes are located — before severe weather strikes. A safe place at home or work can include an indoor basement, an interior room without windows or a storm shelter.

Join #SafePlaceSelfieDay by showing us your safe space!

Here’s how to participate:

  • Take a selfie in your safe place. Include your family, friends, pets, or co-workers!
  • Share your picture on social media using the hashtag #SafePlaceSelfie.
  • Tag your family and friends on social media and encourage them to identify their own safe place.
  • Spread the word that knowing your safe place ahead of time is the best way to prepare for extreme weather.
