March 2024 Climate Review:

Temperatures were above normal by around 4.5 to 6 degrees. 3 of our 5 long-term climate sites established a top 10 warmest March (Paducah and Cape Girardeau tied their 6th warmest and Poplar Bluff 8th warmest). The month started off a bit chilly on the 1st, but quickly warmed up well into the 70s from the 3rd through the 5th. Several locations even reached 80 degrees on the 4th, including Paducah and Evansville. This was the 2nd earliest 80 degree reading in both cities. Another pronounced warm spell was observed on the 13th and 14th with highs once again well into the 70s. Our coolest period of the month was from the 18th into the morning of the 19th when highs only reached the upper 30s to mid 40s and lows fell well down into the 20s. Temperatures flipped back and forth from the 20th through 28th. Most of the region observed temperatures at or below freezing on the morning of the 28th. The month ended on a warm note with highs back into the 70s for the final 3 days of the month (several locations even reached 80 on the 30th and 31st).

Precipitation finished drier than normal across essentially the entire Quad-State region. The only exception was a small corridor in southeast Missouri from Poplar Bluff to Marble Hill which finished right near normal with 3.75” to 4.75”. Most of the region only received amounts ranging from 1 to 3”, which was 1.5 to 3” below normal for March. The driest areas were focused across the Pennyrile region of west Kentucky including Owensboro, Madisonville, and Hopkinsville. The highest observed amount in our area was 4.69” at the Poplar Bluff Airport.
