Heat Wave Expands to the East Coast; Flash Flooding Likely in the Central Plains into the Midwest; Severe Thunderstorms in the Northeast

Dangerous, prolonged heat is ongoing in the Mid-South to Mid-Mississippi Valley and heat expands into the Northeast for a brief period today. Widely scattered instances of flash flooding due to heavy rains are forecast from northeast Kansas to much of Indiana. Overview

A thunderstorm complex in the form of a bow echo traversed across portions of southeast Missouri into southern areas of western Kentucky during the afternoon hours on May 3. The bow echo produced an EF-1 tornado that caused damage in Marston, MO, in New Madrid County. Widespread straight line wind damage was also observed with these storms from Van Buren, Doniphan, and Poplar Bluff, Missouri eastward into the Mayfield, Murray, and Fulton areas of western Kentucky. Winds of 60 to 70 mph caused tree and roof damage along with power outages in some areas.
