Lake-effect Snow and Whiteout Conditions in the Great Lakes Region; Below-average Temperatures in the East

Heavy lake-effect and lake-enhanced snow will persist downwind of the Great Lakes and produce some whiteout conditions that could cause difficult travel conditions. A coastal low will produce moderate to heavy snow over parts of southern and eastern New England into the afternoon. On the afternoon and evening of May 6th numerous thunderstorms spawned tornadoes across portions of north central KS and south central NE. Over 24 tornadoes were surveyed in these areas with the highest rating of EF3 near Munden, KS. In fact, 6 tornadoes tracked through Republic County in about a 3 hour period. A few of the thunderstorms continued eastward into the evening after sunset producing weaker tornadoes.

 

 

 

At one point in the event there were 4 tornadoes on the ground nearly simultaneously as seen in this radar image below.
