Sacramento Office of Emergency Services
  1. What is the mission of your organization?
The Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services (SacOES) coordinates the overall Sacramento Countywide response to large scale incidents and disasters. SacOES is responsible for alerting and notifying appropriate agencies when disaster strikes; coordinating all agencies that respond; ensuring resources are available and mobilized in times of disaster; developing plans and procedures in response to and recovery from disasters; and developing and providing preparedness materials for the public.

  2. What has your organization done to promote a Weather Ready Nation? (i.e. what did your WFO recognize your for?)
Our office produced the Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke Graphic which has been implemented on social media posts and adopted by the NWS and NWS Sacramento. We continue to include NWS Sacramento colleagues in the various tabletop and functional exercises as well as Operational Area meetings. Finally, we partnered with the NWS Sacramento to explore the dangers of leaving kids or pets in hot cars by conducting an experiment and baking cookies on the dashboard of our vehicles (photo attached).

  3. What does being an Ambassador mean to you?
This is an opportunity to develop relationships with the local National Weather Service, to share messaging to the public. More importantly to have effective working relationships during disasters and times of need.

  4. What are your goals for the next year concerning preparedness?
Developing a drought and climate change plan in which we’d love to involve the NWS Sacramento Office. We look to their sage advice, research and technical skill to advise our planners in developing quality products for the public and the first responder community.
