Confidence is increasing that above normal temperatures are likely to develop across the western US. As well as, a high probability for drier conditions across Nevada for the first week of June. An area of high pressure is forecast to build in over the NW US for the later half of next week, leading high temperatures to potentially reach the upper 80s to upper 90s across the Silver State.
As the calendar will officially turns the page to June on Saturday, it signals two important events, the start of meteorological Summer, and the beginning of the seasonal growing season for NE Nevada. That will mean the resumption of all Frost and Freeze Hazard products should conditions warrant their issuance. Although not expected in the near term, frosts (lows ~32⁰F), freezes (lows between ~31⁰F and 29⁰F), and hard freezes, (which occur when temperatures fall to 28⁰F or less), can occur well into June and even July for some areas! So listed below are the dates of the average last hard freeze, and the official start of the growing season for our climate sites. Location, Average Last hard freeze, Start of Growing Season. Elko: May 16th and June 1st. Ely: June 2nd and June 1st. Eureka: May 23rd and June 1st. Tonopah: April 21st and June 1st. Winnemucca: May 30th and June 1st.
