Late-Summer Heat Wave

Although the Duluth Airport has officially only set one new Maximum Temperature this month, on the 20th, the 28th marked the 14th consecutive day that Duluth reached at least 80 degrees F. The longest stretch of consecutive 80 degree days in Duluth recorded history is 15 days.

The first two weeks of August averaged near-normal in the Northland. Howerver, temperatures took a trend for the warm side by mid-month. The Late-Summer Heat Wave brought record breaking temperatures in the 90s to portionds of the Northland August 20-21st.

A cold front passed over the region the night of the 21st, bringing a very welcome relief to the humidity and a drop in temperatures. However, the cool-down was short lived. Temperatures took another push upward through the weekend of the 23rd-24th, bringing near record temperatures once again to the Northland on Sunday, August 25th-27th. The heat and humidity also brought some much needed rain to portions of the Northland. Rainfall totals from August25th-26th.

The latest calendar day the International Falls Airport has recorded a 90 degree temperature is September 27th. The warmest temperature observed at the International Falls, MN Airport in the month of August was 96 degrees on August 9th, 1920.

The low temperature of 77 degrees on August 25th tied for the third warmest low temperature in Duluth weather history. It was also the warmest low ever recorded in the month of August.
