Upcoming NOAA Weather Radio Outage

The National Weather Service (NWS) Office in Goodland, KS, will conduct a required, scheduled update to its Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) from approximately 7:00 AM MT on June 16th through approximately 4:00 PM MT on June 18th. The NWS uses the AWIPS computer system to display and integrate weather and water information, and to send life-saving information, such as weather and water warnings, to the public. This update will be phased in for all NWS offices nationwide.

During the time of the update, forecast operations will be conducted by our service back-up office in Dodge City, KS, to minimize any potential interruption to services. No impacts to our core services of forecast products, including weather watches, warnings, and advisories, are expected during this period. However, impacts will occur to the following services:

NOAA Weather Transmitters: A listing of NOAA Weather Radio transmitters that will be impacted can be found at (https://www.weather.gov/nwr/wfo_list?WFO=gld).
Local graphical forecast maps that are hosted in numerous places on www.weather.gov/gld may not update. This includes all maps on the Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook page (https://www.weather.gov/erh/ghwo?wfo=gld).

The forecast office in Goodland, KS will continue established operations and staffing throughout this period for public and partner phone calls, and additional functions that can be completed without AWIPS. This includes:

Providing weather information via social media, phone calls, and 800 mHz radio as we have in the past.
The Goodland radar will remain operational and its products will continue to be distributed as normal.

Periods of planned or unplanned outages highlight the importance of having multiple ways to receive warning information. These alternative sources include: local television/radio stations, Wireless Emergency Alerts, weather apps on your mobile device, such as FEMA or Red Cross app, and the NWS website at weather.gov/gld.
