Lows tonight will range from the mid 50s to the mid 60s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will also be possible.
Here is the latest information concerning the threat for severe weather across much of Arkansas late Tuesday and Tuesday night. The main concerns will be damaging winds and large hail, along with a few tornadoes. The severe weather potential will carry over into early Wednesday across eastern Arkansas.
With the potential for severe weather in the forecast, here is a refresher of the various severe thunderstorm risk categories that are issued by the Storm Prediction Center.
Severe Weather Awareness Week runs from February 26th through March 4th in Arkansas. Today's topic is severe thunderstorms. So, what is a severe thunderstorm? It has winds of 58 mph or greater, and/or quarter size hail or larger. A tornado makes it severe as well. In 2016, straight-line wind gusts reached at least 75 mph almost two dozen times across the state. Hail reached at least baseball size a few times, especially on March 13th. This was the case near Jessieville (Garland County) and Mount Ida (Montgomery County). While storms can crank out a lot of lightning, this is not considered severe. Even small storms can produce lightning.
Our next Skywarn spotter training class is scheduled for this Tuesday, February 28th at 6:00 pm in Jasper, AR (Newton County). The class is free and open to the public.
