Hurricane Dennis

Overview

Dennis formed late Monday, July 4, 2005.  The tropical depression developed just west of the island of Grenada.  The storm quickly gained intensity and was upgraded to a tropical storm early on July 5.  Dennis was upgraded to hurricane strength on July 6 and reached category 4 intensity, with winds around 150 miles an hour, before making landfall in Western Cuba on July 8.  Significant damage was reported in Cuba and Haiti in association with Dennis.  Dennis weakened considerably after its interaction with Cuba but regained category 4 strength, winds around 145 miles an hour, over the east central Gulf of Mexico.  Dennis continued on a north-northwest path and made landfall near Gulf Breeze, Florida as a category 3 hurricane with winds around 120 miles an hour, on Sunday afternoon, July 10th.  Dennis was downgraded to a tropical storm as it entered Marengo County in West Central Alabama on the evening of July 10th.  Dennis was downgraded once more to a tropical depression as it exited West Central Alabama through Pickens County.  Dennis was only a remnant low by Wednesday July 13.

Dennis's local effects were widespread across Central Alabama.  Storm total rain amounts were generally 3 to 6 inches west of Interstate 65, with isolated higher amounts.  Areas of east of Interstate 65 received 2 to 3 inches of rain with isolated higher amounts, especially near the Alabama/Georgia state line.  Wind gusts associated with Dennis produced damage in all 39 counties in Central Alabama.  Wind gusts along the immediate path of Dennis were estimated at 70 to 80 miles an hour, and generally affected the southwestern counties.  The remainder of Central Alabama received isolated gusts to around 60 miles an hour, generally associated with outer rain bands. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down and some structural damage occurred.  Two injuries were reported due to the fallen trees.  Many thousands of residents were without power.  Many counties reported flash flooding.  Minor river flooding occurred along parts of the Cahaba, Tallapoosa, Sucarnoochee, Black Warrior, and Tombigbee river basins.
