Overview

Two rounds of severe weather affected portions of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. The first occurred late June 19, 2022, mainly within the Dakotas, and the second occurred the afternoon and evening of June 20, 2022, over a wider area including much of the Dakotas, Nebraska, and Minnesota. Severe storms produced gusty winds in excess of 80 mph, large hail, and potentially brief tornadoes. Of note were the dusty nature of gusty outflow winds as well as a very hot, unstable air mass fueling thunderstorms. This summary will focus on eastern North Dakota into northwest and west-central Minnesota.
