Inclement Weather in the West This Weekend

A couple of systems will impact portions of the West and especially California with a variety of hazards this weekend. Periods of moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, localized flood concerns and heavy mountain snow are expected. The trouble spot today will be across southern Oregon and northern California into the Sierra, where travel impacts are likely. Read More >

A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for the Southern Sierra Nevada above 4,500 feet from 8 AM PDT Sunday morning until 5 PM PDT Monday afternoon and for the Kern County Mountains above 6000 feet from 5 PM PDT to 11 PM PDT Monday. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph on exposed ridgetops and near the crest and up to 55 mph through the Grapevine. If you plan to travel, consider alternate strategies. If you must travel, remember to carry tire chains, plenty of food, a good deal of water, and warm clothing in your vehicle. For information on road conditions, including closures or delays, call Caltrans at 1-800-427-7623.
A few strong thunderstorms are possible for the majority of the region on Sunday. Funnel clouds, small hail, and wind gusts near 40 miles per hour are some of the hazards associated with strong thunderstorms. In addition to dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes, any thunderstorm can produce intense rainfall rates, leading to localized flooding.
A major storm system will impact Central California Sunday through Monday. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday and continue through Monday. Localized flooding is possible in the Foothills and the San Joaquin Valley. Very heavy snow is possible in the Sierra above 4500 feet and above 6000 feet in the Kern County mountains. Continue to monitor for updates and the latest information on this storm.
