An area of snow will overspread much of central Illinois today. The heaviest amounts will be concentrated along the I-74 corridor, where a few inches of snow are possible.
Timing
- The first area of light snow will begin impacting areas from the Peoria metro northwest before 6 am, spreading toward Bloomington through the morning rush hour.
- The most widespread snow over central Illinois is expected from late morning into the afternoon hours.
- Snow will begin to taper off west of I-55 by mid to late afternoon, and should end near the Indiana border around 6 pm.
Snowfall Amounts
- Amounts of 2 to 3 inches are likely in areas around Galesburg, Havana, Peoria, Lincoln, Bloomington, Champaign, and Danville.
- Amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected from Rushville, southeast through Springfield and Decatur, to Mattoon and Paris.
- Locations around Jacksonville, and along the I-70 corridor, are expected to see less than an inch.
Impacts
- Areas around Bloomington and Peoria will see travel difficulties begin to develop during the morning commute.
- Heavier snow bands will reduce visibility to around a half mile at times, mainly near the I-74 corridor.
- Given the lack of snow over the past several weeks, drivers may need additional time to re-adjust to the poor driving conditions.
