The winter storm system that will move through the area during the middle of the week has shifted its track slightly eastward, and the corresponding heavier snow track is expected over east central Illinois into northwest Indiana as a result. At this point, it appears the heaviest snowfall axis will be along a Danville to Mattoon to Effingham line, with 3-4 inches.

3 things to keep in mind with this event:

  • There is a considerable amount of uncertainty with the projected snow amounts. Because temperatures are expected to be above freezing much of the time, the timing of the rain/snow changeover is a bit more in flux. Also, with the recent warmer weather, the snow may be a bit slower to accumulate (due to warmer ground) unless it is falling rather heavily.
  • There will be a sharp cutoff on the northwest edge, and areas along and northwest of the Illinois River should see little more than flurries from this system.
  • Northerly winds are expected to gust from 30 to 40 mph with this event. While the snow should be wet enough to prevent widespread blowing snow, there will likely still be some drifting that would add to travel difficulties.
