National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

We are looking for a new official snow observer for the city of Springfield.  While most of the official meteorological observations are measured at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, the automated station there is not able to measure snowfall. It is critical that we find an observer to fill this need, in order to support the historical climate record.

Observations are taken at 6-hourly intervals, at the following times:

Time (CST) If snow has fallen in the last 6 hours If no snow has fallen
6 am Snowfall last 6 hours, water equivalent of the snowfall,
and current snow depth
Current snow depth if it is at least a trace
Noon Snowfall last 6 hours, water equivalent of the snowfall,
current snow depth. Water equivalent of the snow on the ground if the depth is at least 2 inches.
Water equivalent of the snow on the
ground if the depth is at least 2 inches, otherwise no report needed
6 pm Snowfall last 6 hours, water equivalent of the snowfall,
and current snow depth
No report needed
Midnight Snowfall last 6 hours, water equivalent of the snowfall,
and current snow depth
No report needed

Observations need to be taken within 5 miles of the airport, but the closer to the airport, the better. We will provide you with a rain gauge, along with a snow measuring stick and snowboard, to take the observations.

If you can help us out, or if you'd like more information, please give us a call at 217-732-3089 between 8:30 am and 4 pm, or send an E-mail to w-ilx.webmaster@noaa.gov
