Applications for the 2025 Summer Student Volunteer Program are now closed. Applications for the Fall/Spring virtual opportunity will open in June.

Additional Information:

The student volunteer position is open to any student (undergraduate or graduate) that is interested in the atmospheric sciences. You must be a current student and enrolled in an atmospheric science, meteorology, or closely related program to be eligible. There are two student volunteer seasons, a season during the school year (September to March) and a season during the summer months (late May to early August). The program will be virtual during the school year and will generally be in-person during the summer months. Students during both programs will work with a designated mentor on a project tailed to their interests and learn more about the National Weather Service and day to day operations. For the summer student volunteer program, students will work alongside operational forecasters to gain valuable experience. Volunteers who wish to participate in the in-person summer program should expect to report to NWS Memphis' office in Memphis, TN. Hybrid and virtual positions are available on a case to case basis for the summer program.

  • This is an unpaid position. Students are encouraged, but not required, to work with their college or university program to acquire class credit for their experience

  • If there are more students than available volunteer slots, informal interviews may be conducted by WFO management and/or student volunteer mentors to determine who is selected

  • For questions about the NWS Memphis student volunteer program or the application process, please contact Lead Meteorologist Caroline Adcock at Caroline.Adcock@noaa.gov
