Fire Weather Planning Forecast for SW VA...SE WV and NW NC
National Weather Service Blacksburg VA
257 AM EDT Fri Apr 17 2026

.DISCUSSION...

Observed rainfall amounts from the passing cold front overnight
have been predominantly less than 0.10 inches of new rainfall,
with most locations only seeing 0.01 to 0.05 inches of new
rainfall. This will keep ground and fuel conditions dry today
and into the weekend.

Warm and dry conditions are expected for both Friday and
Saturday. Winds westerly Friday and southwesterly
Saturday...gustier Saturday ahead of an approaching cold front.

All things considered, these conditions will continue to
support high fire danger of adverse fire behavior across the
entire region. Fire containment for new starts will be difficult
through Saturday. The next notable chance for any widespread
wetting rainfall comes Saturday night into Sunday with a cold
front, but amounts look very light again for most.

We cool down back to normal behind the front early next
week with a very dry airmass. Monday and Tuesday could see
humidities in the teens.

These aforementioned conditions will make fire containment
increasingly difficult through Saturday and into next week.
