Discontinuation of the Routine Temperature and Precipitation Product on May 6th
On May 6th, 2026, the Routine Temperature and Precipitation product, also known as the RTP, will no longer be produced by local National Weather Service (NWS) offices. This includes the state of Utah RTP product with the product ID of RTPUT, which is produced by the Weather Forecast Office in Salt Lake City (WFO SLC). In tandem with this change, the production of climate Record Event Reports (RER)s for cooperative observing stations in WFO SLC’s area of forecast responsibility will also cease to be produced. The RER products for the three climate sites in WFO SLC’s area of responsibility - Cedar City, Evanston, and Salt Lake City - will continue to be produced as usual.
The NWS Service Change Notice for the national RTP discontinuation can be found here: https://www.weather.gov/media/notification/pdf_2026/scn26-34_AR_ER_WR_RTP_Discontinuation.pdf. This document provides the rationale for the discontinuation of the product, as well as several resources from which the information currently in the RTP can continue to be collected after that product is discontinued. In addition to the sources listed in the SCN, users interested in the airport readings previously found in the RTP may the Weather and Hazards Data Viewer, through which the user can access airport readings by clicking on the desired location here: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/hazards?obs=true&wfo=slc. Users interested in the cooperative observer readings will be able to find readings for individual sites at this page: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/climate?wfo=slc.
Additionally, due to the national decision to discontinue the RTP, the local software at WFO SLC which created both RTPUT and RERs for cooperative observer sites will no longer be available.
