Above Normal Temperatures, Strong Thunderstorms, Tropical Development Being Monitored

Well above normal temperatures are forecast to shift from the northern Plains through the Northeast U.S. over the long holiday weekend. A few strong to severe thunderstorm will be possible as well along with a potential for excessive rainfall. November 2016 was very warm for the region.  For Topeka, the average temperature for this month was 51.2 degrees.  This tied November 1999 for the warmest November on record.  Weather data began being recorded in Topeka in 1887.  The normal average temperature for November is 43.8 degrees.  The map below from the Southeast Regional Climate Center shows that the above normal temperatures in November were rather widespread. 

 

 

The warmth of November, in combination with warmth from earlier in the season, aided in placing the meteorological autumn season of September through November as the third warmest autumn on record in Topeka.  Again, the warmth was widespread across the area.
