Heat and Fire Weather Concerns for the Center of the Nation; Coastal Impacts Across the East

Excessive heat returns for portions of the Plains today where heat indices will likely climb above the century mark. Furthermore, warm temperatures, strong winds and dry fuels may result in rapid spread of wild fires across the western High Plains today. For the east coast, lingering storm with onshore flow will bring high surf, dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding, especially at high tide. Read More >

Independence Day Weather History/Extremes
Grand Island, NE

Independence Day ushers in the climatologically hottest month of the year - July. The majority of Independence Days in the Nebraska Tri Cities see afternoon high temperatures between the mid-80s and low-90s, while morning low temperatures typically settle somewhere in the 60s. However, even in a summer weather pattern (typically less variable than other seasons), some holidays still exhibit notable departures from average conditions. Just in the past 30 years, Independence Day highs in Grand Island have ranged from 73º to 102º. This story highlights Independence Day weather and climate information SPECIFICALLY for Grand Island, where weather records date back 126 years to 1896.

Temperatures: According to the entire period of record, the hottest Independence Day on record was 109º in 1936, and the coolest daytime high was 70º in 1915. As for low temperatures, the chilliest was 48º in 1997, and the warmest was 80º in 1934. Only 14 of 126 Independence Days on record (11%) have featured high temperatures of 100° or higher, and five of these were during the infamously-hot 1930s. Somewhat interestingly, during the past 30 years only ONE holiday has exceeded 93º (that being 102º in 2012).

Rainfall: The wettest Independence Day on record was 2.56" in 1902. However, only three-of-126 have featured more than 1" of rain (and not since 1.53" in 1984). Measurable amounts (0.01" or more) have been recorded in 34-of-126 years, or 27% of the time. In recent years, there has been a trend toward dry Independence Days, as although trace amounts of rain occurred in 2019/2016, it has been 12 years now since measurable rain fell at Central Nebraska Regional Airport (0.47" in 2010).

** Independence Day 2021 Recap **: Last year in 2021, Independence Day was seasonably-warm (slightly warmer-than-average), featuring an afternoon high temperature of 93° and a morning low of 70°. Skies averaged mostly sunny, and steady southerly breezes of 10-15 MPH (occasional higher gusts) during the day eased off a bit during the evening. This marked the 11th-consecutive year with no measurable rain whatsoever during the calendar day of July 4th.
