National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

How did you become interested in your profession?

My father was a weather enthusiast while I was growing up. His enthusiasm for the weather sparked my interest in studying it on a professional level.

What led you to a career with the NWS (National Weather Service)?

It was when I was in my undergrad when I realized the NWS was where I wanted to work. After working for predictive services as a fire weather analyst and working with a few IMETs, I realized not only did I want to forecast fire weather, but I wanted to do so out on the fires as an IMET myself and the NWS is where I could do that.

How did you end up in Pendleton?

I wanted to be on the west coast due to being interested in wildfires. I have years of schooling and training working as a fire weather analyst and well as a fire weather researcher. So when the opportunity came up at Pendleton, I took it.

What do you enjoy most about working for the NWS?

So far, knowing that I am part of providing accurate forecasts to assist with the health and safety of our community.

What is your favorite type of weather and why?

Thunderstorms are my favorite. They are relaxing and the most beautiful weather to watch.

What is the most memorable weather event you've ever experienced?

Thundersnow! Watching a thunderstorm while it was snowing as a child in Germany. The lightning was so bright and made the sky appear purple each time it flashed. It was amazing.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I love to hang out with my family and roller skate. I play roller derby (pre-COVID) and will play again when the time allows.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I see myself as a successful meteorologist/IMET, Fire Weather Program Manager or a Warning Coordination Manager. My passion is in fire weather and working with our partners to make the decision making process much more fluid all while building stronger partnerships with them and the public.
