Radar Upgrade Underway

It’s time for a tune up! The Albuquerque WSR-88D will be down for an important upgrade starting September 22nd.  Here are the details:

When?   September 22nd through 29th

Why?   The replacement of the generator, fuel tanks, and accompanying components. This activity is important to support the radar’s operation during periods of commercial power outages, specifically when hazardous weather is present.

But why now?   September was chosen because it climatologically favors a lack of widespread, significant severe or winter storms.

During the downtime:  Adjacent radars such as KFDX (Cannon AFB), KEPZ (El Paso), KEMX (Tucson), KFSX (Flagstaff), KGJX (Grand Junction), KPUX (Pueblo), KLBB (Lubbock), and KMAF (Midland) will be the available alternatives.
