Overview
|
Thunderstorms that developed across western South Dakota and down across the Nebraska panhandle Tuesday afternoon (June 9th) eventually organized into a north-south oriented line of storms extending from north of Mobridge to south of the I-90 corridor. These storms produced widespread severe weather, including large hail and straight-line damaging winds, throughout the mid to late evening across portions of central and north central South Dakota and throughout the late evening into early overnight hours across northeast South Dakota into Minnesota. |

Environment
Ample instability out ahead of a cold front allowed storms to develop over western South Dakota in the afternoon. Storms progressed eastward and into the Aberdeen County Warning Area (CWA) by the evening, with individual cells dominating the storm mode and occasionally producing severe wind gusts and severe hail. In the late evening, storms took on a more linear shape as they crossed the Missouri River and moved into a more favorable wind environment. Widespread wind damage and wind gusts over 75 miles per hour began to occur over parts of northeastern South Dakota in the late evening. Storms would continue producing severe wind gusts and wind damage as they moved east out of the Aberdeen CWA in the early morning hours.
