Lake-Effect Snow Continues Downwind of the Great Lakes; Below Normal Temperatures Across the Eastern Half of the U.S

Arctic air will continue below normal temperatures across the eastern half of the U.S. through Tuesday with heavy lake-effect snow continuing downwind of the Great Lakes. High pressure over the western half of the U.S. will support mainly dry weather for much of the region with above normal temperatures this week. Read More >

Event Synopsis:
A vigorous, but relatively fast moving winter storm system tracked across South Dakota Wednesday night and Thursday.  Even with the fairly quick movement of the system, storm total snowfall amounts were quite impressive. In fact, during the peak of the snowstorm, snowfall rates of 1” to 2” per hour were observed!

The heaviest snow generally fell across portions of north-central and northeastern South Dakota, with a few locations picking up 12” to 15” of snow.  Further south over central portions of the state, freezing rain and sleet mixed in with the snow limiting accumulations there (see snowfall map below).  In fact, spotters from Lyman, Jones and Stanley Counties reported ice accumulations/glazing up to 0.5”, as well as significant sleet accumulations to around 3”.

Final Storm Total Snowfall Map

Below is a storm total snowfall map with all snow totals recieved as of 7am Friday.  The NWS would like to thank all of the cooperative observers, law enforement officials, and emergency managers for their reports.   A tablar listing of snow and ice amounts is also provided below.
