2010 Weather Year in Review
2010 Central Alabama Headlines
**Note: All of the following data should be considered preliminary. Not all of the data has been quality controlled.**
Drought Conditions
After a fairly normal winter and spring rainfall pattern, conditions changed during the summer as below normal rainfall occurred across portions of Central Alabama, especially in the east and southeast sections. This was followed by below normal rainfall in September, and by mid September moderate to severe drought conditions developed in the eastern sections of Central Alabama. By late September, the drought conditions worsened and spread westward, encompassing most of Central Alabama by mid October.
The drought was most severe in east-central and southeast sections, where Severe to Extreme Drought Conditions prevailed. Drought conditions persisted through the remainder of October into November as only sporadic rainfall occurred. Some easing of the drought finally began in late November as periodic and more substantial rainfall gradually returned to the area, with this pattern continuing into December. By mid and late December, drought conditions receded into the eastern sections of Central Alabama.
In contrast to the 2007 drought, when impacts were far reaching, affecting municipal water supplies, crops, recreational interests, etc., the 2010 drought’s main impact appears to have been to farm crops. Many crop yields were diminished due to the drought, and impacts were also felt by cattle farmers as winter forage was affected. However, no major impacts to municipal water supplies and area reservoirs have been reported at this time.
In comparison to the 2007 Drought, when yearly rainfall deficits averaged 20 to 30 inches over much of Central Alabama, yearly deficits in 2010 were generally from 5 to 15 inches in most places, with some locations even receiving near normal rainfall for the year.
Drought data was taken from several sources. Additional Drought Information can be found at the following links;

2010 Flooding
Fairly normal rainfall in the winter and spring months produced periodic river flooding in Central Alabama. A weather pattern that generated periodic storm systems brought frequent rainfall to the area during the first half of the year, with some minor river flooding occurring each month from January through May. The most widespread flooding occurred during the first half of March, when a storm system produced from three to five inches of rain, with local totals to eight inches, across much of Central Alabama. Minor flooding occurred on all major area rivers following this rainfall, with the main impacts to low-lying farm and pasture lands, as well as some camps and cabins.
A more significant impact from the March rainfall was severe flash flooding that occurred on the 10th. From four to eight inches of rainfall in less than six hours produced widespread severe flash flooding across portions of Shelby, Jefferson and Talladega counties, with numerous roads and highways flooded as small creeks and streams overflowed their banks. As many as ten roads were still closed from this flooding in Shelby County as late as the 12th of the month.
Severe flash flooding also occurred on June 4th in Roanoke in southern Randolph County. Over five inches of rain fell in Roanoke in around two hours as afternoon thunderstorms moved through the area. This produced brief but widespread street flooding in Roanoke, with water two to three feet deep in some buildings in the downtown area and at least five homes flooded in the area. Only a few locations received over a quarter inch of rain on this day.

Tropical Weather
Tropical Cyclone Activity in the Atlantic Basin was well above average during the 2010 season. A total of 19 named storms formed, of which 12 became hurricanes and 5 became major hurricanes. The long term averages are 11 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes. There were also two tropical depressions that did not reach tropical storm strength. In terms of accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, 2010 was much above average, at 190 percent of the long-term median value.
The number of named storms and hurricanes during 2010 was the highest since the record-setting 2005 season. The number of storms also tied with 1887 and 1995 for third highest on record. Of those, 12 became hurricanes. Therefore, 2010 tied with 1969 for second highest on record. Five of those reached major hurricane status of Category 3 or higher. The ACE value for 2010 was also the highest since 2005 and the eleventh highest in the basin since 1944.
Tropical Depression #5 formed on August 10 in the eastern Gulf of America. The system weakened and the remnants moved onshore in Louisiana on Aug 12. The remnants of TD #5 then moved slowly northeastward across Central Alabama over the next several days. The system brought 1-3 inches of rainfall to much of Central Alabama, with locally higher amounts reported. Here is a map of rainfall totals with the remnants of TD #5. This was the only tropical system having any effect Central Alabama in 2010.

Winter Weather & Cold
A surface low in the northern Gulf of America along with an upper level disturbance moving southeastward from the Great Plains contributed to an observation of heavy snowfall on Christmas Day, 2010. The snowfall blanketed much of northern and central Alabama. Some locations saw the first white Christmas on record, while others just missed out on a White Christmas. A band of 2 to 4 inches of snow fell near and north of a line from Hamilton, to Oneonta, to Talladega to Wedowee.
Some light freezing rain, sleet and snow occurred across Central Alabama on December 15. A light glaze of ice developed on many elevated and exposed surfaces. Numerous morning rush hour accidents occurred. The icing only lasted for a few hours as surface temperatures warmed above freezing during the day. The light freezing rain was reported from Hamilton and Tuscaloosa, to Birmingham and even Troy.
A low pressure system moving across the northern Gulf of America brought a swath of snow to a large portion of Central Alabama on February 12 . The highest snowfall amounts were in the eastern and southern sections of Central Alabama, with 3 to as much as 7 inches of snow reported in these areas. The snow caused numerous businesses and schools to close, and created hazardous travel across a large portion of the area.
A light mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain also occurred on January 7 and on March 2.
The first 15 days of January were the coldest beginning of the year on record for Central Alabama.

Sizzling Summer Heat
High pressure and high moisture values dominated the weather pattern here in Central Alabama for much of the summer. This lead to above normal temperatures both during the day and at night, along with very high heat index values. The heat wave began in June and then intensified in late July and early August when afternoon highs climbed above 100 degrees in most locations. It was so warm in fact, that numerous climatological top ten measurements occurred.
