Overview
A developing low pressure system moving out of the Central Plains into the Midwest caused heavy snow to fall over portions of the Dakotas and Minnesota. Due to the high moisture content, snow was wet and heavy exacerbating impacts felt around the region.Snow/Ice
Storm Total Observed Snow Total Map. This map is preliminary and subject to changes. |
Heavy snow fell across much of the region excluding the Devils Lake Basin and northern red River Valley. Highest amounts fell as a swath of 12-15 inches from near Thief River Falls south through Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls into west-central Minnesota. This snow held a high moisture content with values in this highest swath of snow between 1.0 and 1.5 inches of snow water equivalent.
Below is a list of select preliminary snow totals around the area.

Environment
An upper trough moving out of the Central Rockies moved into then into Midwest while becoming negatively tilted. This negative was driven by a strengthening zonal jet near the base and windward of the trough noted in the 300 mb analysis. This provided ample upper level support and divergence over the Dakotas into Minnesota. As the base of the trough outran its northern extent, forcing was slow to move east in the Northern Plains.
Driven by the synoptic forcing aloft, frontogenetical forcing was maximized near a zone of convergence/deformation between southeasterly winds lee of the trough and northerly winds behind the trough as shown in the 700 mb analysis. Under this area resided most efficient snow production shown on radar as developing snow bands on the north and western side of the deepening 700 mb low.

Relatively high moisture content fed into this area of efficient snow production from the south seen in the 850 mb analysis. This tongue of higher moisture content started to move in from the south then transitioned to source more from the southeast then east as the low deepened and occluded. This pivoting of moisture over the eastern Dakotas into western Minnesota aided in highest snowfall amounts. The relatively high moisture content noted by precipitable water values greater than half an inch also led to the high liquid content within snow. Snow water equivalent values within Minnesota counties like Otter Tail and Wilkin ranged between 1.0 and 1.5 inches (not shown).
While winds behind a cold front the night of March 9 gusted to 35 mph led to some blowing and more so drifting of snow, the far away track of the surface low from Kansas to the lower peninsula of Michigan meant winds were not high enough to create widespread blowing snow.
