Environment
A shortwave trough ejected out of the Pacific Northwest into the Northern Plains around the northern periphery of a very large upper ridge centered over the CONUS. Strong instability, ample moisture, and strong mid level shear ahead of this shortwave trough allowed for organized, convection across many locations within the Dakotas into Minnesota.
Two rounds of severe thunderstorms occurred, with the first moving in during the sunrise time frame (12z). This line of storms originated in central and eastern MT during the overnight hours of July 9th and translated across the state of ND throughout the night following the mean wind. Storms became unorganized and weakened past Minot, but tapped into strong instability ahead of the approaching cold front near the Devils Lake Basin. This allowed the storms to quickly organized and intensify over the Devils Lake Basin and track eastward across the entire forecast area. Storms continued to organize across the Red River Valley exiting the eastern portions of our forecast area (Lake of the Woods, through Hubbard county) past 9am. Strong winds accompanied these storms, with the highest report being 68mph along with multiple trees down.
Second round of storms fired along the boundary in the southern valley during the late afternoon, with hail as the predominant threat. Up to ping pong ball size hail was reported in some locations as these storms quickly moved off towards the SE into central MN.
