A Powerful Storm System To Impact the Southern Plains to the Gulf Coast

A vigorous storm system will develop over the southern Plains and deliver several threats on Thursday. Strong winds are expected across the region along with fire weather concerns from southeast New Mexico to south Texas. A marginal risk of severe storms and excessive rain from the ArkLaTex to the central Gulf Coast. Even a few inches of snow will be possible in Texas, including just west of DFW. Read More >

Thunderstorms developed over northeast Wisconsin on the afternoon of Friday, August 14.  The storms strengthened as they pushed south.  Several storms merged together as they approached the Green Bay area, resulting in damaging wind gusts.  A measured wind gust of 62 mph occurred at Austin Straubel airport in Ashwaubenon. Numerous reports of wind damage were received from the west side of Green Bay, as well as in the Kaukauna and Chilton areas. Golf ball-sized hail was reported just northwest of Green Bay, in the Pulaski area.

NWS Radar Loop

Loop of radar velocity as the storms surged south across the Green Bay area.  Strong winds blowing south toward the radar (located at the red dot near the center of the imagery) initially appear as bright green radar returns over southern Oconto county.  The wind signature changes to bright red once the strong winds push south of the radar.  Click image for larger view.
