THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WILMINGTON OH HAS CONFIRMED A
MICROBURST NEAR .9 ENE SUNMAN IN RIPLEY COUNTY INDIANA ON JUNE 15
2010.

THIS MICROBURST RESULTED IN A LARGE NUMBER OF TREES WITHIN A
FORESTED AREA BEING BLOWN DOWN OR SNAPPED OFF. DAMAGE IN THE
IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF THE MICROBURST INCLUDED TREES DOWNED AT TWO
HOMES AND A CAR PORT DESTROYED.

FOR REFERENCE...
A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW AREA
OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS THAN
5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL
WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND
CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE. STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND
THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO DIFFERENTIATE
THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.

These radar images show a line of thunderstorms moving across Ripley County and into Dearborn County. A bowing structure is evident on reflectivity, with a velocity signature indicating 50-60 knots at only 1000 feet above ground level.
