NWS Grand Junction Computer System Upgrade

The National Weather Service in Grand Junction, Colorado will be conducting a required, scheduled update to their Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) system from May 27th at 6:00AM MDT through midday May 29th. The NWS uses the AWIPS computer system to display and integrate weather and water information, and to send life-saving information, such as weather and water warnings, to the public.

During the time of the update, forecast operations will be conducted by our service back-up office in Salt Lake City, Utah, and our secondary backup office in Boulder, Colorado, to minimize any potential interruption to services. No impacts to our core services of forecast products and weather watches, warnings and advisories are expected during this period. However, limited impacts will occur to the following services:

All of the 9 NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts provided by the National Weather Service (NWS) Grand Junction office will go off the air due to a computer system upgrade. A listing of NOAA Weather Radio transmitters that will be impacted can be found at weather.gov/nwr/wfo_list?WFO=GJT. NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts are expected to return to service midday Thursday, May 29th.

Local graphical forecast maps that are hosted in numerous places on www.weather.gov/gjt will not be updated. This includes all maps on the Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook page (https://www.weather.gov/erh/ghwo?wfo=gjt), the majority of the graphics on the Colorado Weather Impacts Page (https://www.weather.gov/bou/CO_WeatherImpacts), and the snowfall tables on the Winter Weather page (https://www.weather.gov/gjt/winter).

Daily climate reports from https://www.weather.gov/wrh/climate?wfo=gjt may also be delayed until the upgrade is complete.
