A front followed by a low are bringing rain to the region into the weekend. Will likely see a good break in the rain for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, around Friday. Increasing confidence in more significant rain for Saturday, with low confidence on which county (between Santa Barbara, Ventura, and LA Counties) will be impacted the most. Which county will see the greatest impacts depends on where the low pressure system tracks. There is a growing risk for significant impacts Saturday, including dangerous flooding, damaging debris flows and major road closures. Monitor the forecast for updates and follow advice from local law officials.
A strong low pressure system is bringing rain with possible thunderstorms to the area into this weekend. Moderate impacts are expected for the beginning portion of the storm for parts of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. This risk shifts southward to include Santa Barbara, Ventura and LA Counties for Saturday, when the most significant impacts are possible. We are expecting travel delays, blown objects and palm fronds in roadways, rockslides and mudslides on canyon roads, roadway flooding and the potential for significant roadway flooding, increased flow in creeks and streams and swiftwater rescues, and potential for damaging debris flows and flooding in and near recent burn scars. Plan accordingly by limiting travel during the peak of the storm, changing outdoor plans, and following guidance from local law enforcement. Refer to the timing graphic for when the peak of the storm will affect your location.
Heavier rain is expected tonight into Saturday as the main low moves over the area. Significant rain totals of 2-3 inches are expected for southern portions of the area, with higher 3 to 6 inches for favored mountains and hills. Rain will likely be heavy at times, and for areas that see the heaviest rain, they could also see significant roadway flooding, road closures, rock and mudslides on canyon roads, and debris flows and flash flooding in and near recent burn scars. Follow guidance from local law enforcement, avoid flooded roads, stay aware of your surroundings and avoid travel during the heaviest rain if possible.
