Post Tropical Cyclone Colin, June 7, 2016

Summary

Tropical Storm Colin (Figure 1) formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico on June 5, 2016. The formation of Colin marked the earliest that three tropical storms had formed in the Atlantic Basin, breaking a record from 1887. Colin tracked northeast, gaining strength with maximum sustained winds of around 50 mph over the northern Gulf of Mexico. The system made landfall along the eastern portion of the Florida Big Bend coast producing heavy rainfall and tornadoes over Florida with one downing death at St. George Island. As Colin moved rapidly northeast along the Georgia and South Carolina coast, the storm started to lose its tropical characteristics and was classified as post-tropical off the North Carolina coast on June 7. Wind gusts to 45 knots (52 mph) were observed at Diamond Shoals Buoy with 38 knots (44 mph) at Cape Hatteras during the morning of June 7. The main story in eastern North Carolina with Colin was heavy rainfall. Widespread amounts of 3 to 5 inches were observed primarily in Carteret and Craven Counties (Figure 2).
