The existing NWS WFO Newport/Morehead City Graphical Hazards have been discontinued due to technical issues.  A new version of these hazards graphics is under development and will be implemented once it has passed an internal testing period.  This will hopefully come in 2016, but we cannot estimate when at this time.  We regret the inconvenience and hope you found the previous version of this webpage and graphics useful.  We hope you will find the new version of this webpage just as useful when it comes online.

General Information

Strong winds not associated with thunderstorms are often referred to as gradient winds. They are usually the result of tight pressure gradients between strong areas of low pressure and high pressure. These strong winds can be just as strong as thunderstorm wind gusts, but cover a much larger area, and can result in widespread damage.

Winds associated with tropical systems are also covered in this category.

High Wind Safety Tips:
  • Strong gusty winds will make travel difficult, especially if you are driving a high profile vehicle. Motorists should use extreme caution. Persons planning to drive should consider delaying travel until the high wind threat diminishes.
  • People at home should secure any loose outdoor items shuch as garbage cans and lawn furniture.
  • Stay alert for the possibility of falling tree limbs and downed power lines.
