Heavy Rainfall and Severe Thunderstorm Threats for the Plains and Southeast

A frontal boundary extending from the western High Plains to the Southeast will focus additional showers and thunderstorms this weekend. Some of these storms may become severe, alongside frequent lightning, and isolated instances of flash flooding. Much colder temperatures have arrived behind the departing system. These colder temperatures will likely stick around into the second half of this month. This will be the coldest air of the season so far. Now is a good time to prepare for the arrival of very cold temperatures.

Average high temperatures are around 31 degrees and average low temperatures are around 18 degrees in mid-December. There is a high probability that temperatures will be below these averages today and tonight, and again Monday night into the middle of next week. Some days over the next two weeks could even be much colder, if the recent snowfall remains on the ground. Snow cover helps keep the air temperature colder than it otherwise would be.
