Flooding Possible in the Southwest U.S.; Coastal Storm to Impact the East

Heavy to excessive rainfall is expected today into Wednesday over New Mexico into far west Texas. Flash flooding and debris flows in wildfire burn areas will be possible. A strong coastal storm will develop off the Mid-Atlantic coast Wednesday, intensifying toward southern New England this weekend. The river gauge at the South Branch Rock River at Waupun has been discontinued. It was operated in cooperation with the City of Waupun and the USGS. The NWS has flood stages established for that site corresponding to flood impacts. The NWS does not issue river water level forecasts for that location, however we issue river flood warnings when the river level exceeds the flood stage. The river flood warnings message the flood hazards at the known water level. Since there are no longer observed flood levels, the NWS will no longer issue river flood warnings for that location.

If there is observed flooding or expected flooding in the area based either on reports or radar estimated precipitation, we will issue a flood advisory, flood warning, or flash flood warning for the area of concern. The wording will highlight the hazard but will not mention a specific river level or impacts tied to that river level as listed on the NWS Water Prediction Service page for Waupun.
