How did you become interested in your profession?

My interests started well above our planet. First I wanted to be an astronaut, then a pilot, then an astronomer. Finally in 4th grade, I landed on meteorology. I was terrified of thunderstorms. One day, I made myself sit through a thunderstorm and realized how beautiful it was. From that point on, I was hooked.

What led you to a career with the NWS (National Weather Service)?

While earning my MS at SDSM&T in Rapid City, we were provided the opportunity to do a volunteer experience with the NWS in Rapid City. I loved every second of that experience, and found some great mentors there. When an Meteorologist Intern position opened at a neighboring office, they helped me prepare so I could get my foot in the door.

How did you end up in Pendleton?

I started my career at the NWS office in Riverton WY as a Meteorologist Intern. I was promoted to a General Forecaster after a couple of years there, and remained at NWS Riverton for a total of 12 years. After that, I was selected as a Lead Meteorologist at NWS Boise, ID where I spent the next 6 years. Finally in 2022, I was offered the opportunity to join NWS Pendleton as their Warning Coordination Meteorologist.

What do you enjoy most about working for the NWS?

I enjoy working with our partners to ensure their needs are being met, and really enjoy working to keep the NWS moving forward. Additionally, I really like helping other forecasters follow their passions and earn promotions to illustrate their talents. I have met some outstanding people throughout my career, both within the NWS and external. Generally, I've had really awesome experiences throughout my career, and I look forward to seeing what's next.

What is your favorite type of weather and why?

Fall... just general Fall with the cooler conditions and rain with some snow mixed in. I find it soothing.

What is the most memorable weather event you've ever experienced?

My first year in Boise, ID was coined "snowpocalypse" with the city's 100 year snowfall event. Watching the community react to that impressive amount of snow was an incredible experience. Most of the office blamed the snowfall on my arrival since I arrived at the tail end of Fall.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?

My family is my number one thing outside of work. When my husband and I aren't running our kids everywhere, the calm family time is some of my favorite time. Otherwise, I am a huge movie fan (especially Marvel), and an avid reader. Playing with our pets (including a cat, dogs, and more) are also some of my favorite things.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I'll still be enjoying life with the National Weather Service. Where and in what role remain to be seen, but I hope to still be a productive member of the NWS family.
