How did you become interested in your profession?
I was always interested in weather from a young age, especially growing up at the west end of the Columbia River Gorge where winter storms bringing snow and freezing rain occurred with more regularity than the surrounding area. I'd flip between the local TV meteorologists and try to figure out which forecast projected the most snow. In addition to winter weather I was also fascinated by thunderstorms, an aspect of meteorology that is not as pronounced in the PNW compared to other portions of the county.
What led you to a career with the NWS (National Weather Service)?
I was fortunate enough to job shadow at an NWS office prior to college which is where I became set on working in the operational side of meteorology. After graduating from the University of Washington(Go Huskies!) I got a job as an Operational Meteorologist in the private sector focusing on road weather where I worked with a diverse group of clients throughout the west coast and British Columbia. After roughly 4 years in the private sector I was ready to further my career as a meteorologist and felt the NWS was my best choice moving forward.
How did you end up in Pendleton?
Fire weather is something I've become increasingly interested in as my career has progressed and this office has a fantastic fire weather program.
What do you enjoy most about working for the NWS?
I feel like my weather forecasts make a substantial positive impact. It's great having a diverse group of meteorologists to interact and learn from who come from various backgrounds like the military, research, and/or the private; we are all working together for the common goal of preserving life and property.
What is your favorite type of weather and why?
I enjoy watching mountain thunderstorms near dusk during the summertime. There's nothing like seeing a bolt of lightning light up the silhouette of a thunderstorm; it's beautiful!
What is the most memorable weather event you've ever experienced?
The May 4th 2017 western Washington/Oregon thunderstorm outbreak. I was able to get "front-row seats" with an unobstructed view of the event on the top floor of the UW Atmospheric sciences building. The highlight was having constant analysis of the storm by all of the faculty who wandered to the top of the building to watch as well.
What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?
You'll find me enjoying the great outdoors of the PNW whether that be skiing, camping, or hiking/backpacking. I also try my best to explore different breweries and restaurants around the region.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
An accomplished Incident meteorologist(IMET) and lead forecaster.
