The southwest monsoon remained active through out the month of August, especially for areas over and near the higher terrain, with periods of abundant moisture and bouts of heavy rainfall across the region. For the month as a whole, at or above normal temperatures were experienced across south central and southeast Colorado, save for pockets of below seasonal temperatures across the southeast plains. At or above normal precipitation was experienced across south central Colorado through the month of August, with generally below normal precipitation, save for pockets of above normal precipitation, experienced across the southeast plains.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of  August was 64.5 degrees. This is 1.3 degrees above normal and makes August of 2022 tied with August of 1933 and 1970, as the 10th warmest August on record in Alamosa. This remains well behind the warmest August of 2011, when the average monthly temperature was 66.0 degrees.  Alamosa recorded 3.80 inches of precipitation through the month of August. This is 2.51 inches above normal and makes August of 2022 the 2rd wettest August on record, just behind the 5.50 inches recorded in August of 1993.  The 3.80 inches of precipitation in August is 51 percent of the average annual precipitation (7.39") recorded in Alamosa. 

 

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of August was 71.7 degrees. This is 1.6 degrees above normal and makes August of 2022 the 8th warmest August on record in Colorado Springs. This remains well behind the warmest August of 2011, when the average monthly temperature was 74.1 degrees.  Colorado Springs recorded 1.82 inches of precipitation through the month of August, which is 1.14 inches below normal. This makes August of 2022 the 39th driest on record in Colorado Springs, well ahead of the driest August of 2012, when only 0.12 inches of precipitation was recorded. Colorado Springs saw temperatures at or above 90 degrees six times through the month of August. This brings the 2022 seasonal total up to 34 days with temperatures at or above 90 degrees in Colorado Springs, and is tied with 2010 and 2018, as the 7th most 90+ degree days in Colorado Springs. This is well behind the 52 days of 90+ degree temperatures recorded in 2020. 

 

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the past month of August was 77.0 degrees. This is 2.2 degrees above normal and makes August of 2022 the 10th warmest August on record in Pueblo.  This remains well behind the warmest August of 1970, when the average monthly temperature was 79.8 degrees. Pueblo recorded 0.64 inches of precipitation through the month of August. This is 1.47 inches below normal and makes August of 2022, tied with August of 1888, as the 19th driest August on record. This remains well behind the driest August of 1900, when only a trace of precipitation was recorded in Pueblo. Pueblo saw temperatures of 100 degrees or greater 4 times in August. This brings the seasonal total to 21 days with temperatures at or above the century mark, which is tied with 1981 as the 5th most 100 degree days in Pueblo on record. This remains behind the 28 days of 100 degree temperatures in 2012 and 2003, the 24 days in 2002 and the 23 days in 2020.   

 

Looking ahead into September in Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 78 degrees and 42 degrees on September 1st, cool to 70 degrees and 32 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of September in Alamosa is 55.9 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.98 inches of precipitation through the month of September. On average, Alamosa sees its first freeze of the season on September 11th.   

In Colorado Springs,  the average high temperature and low temperature of 81 degrees and 54 degrees on September 1st, cool to 72 degrees and 43 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of September in Colorado Springs is 63.0 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 1.35 inches of precipitation through the month of September.  On average, Colorado Springs sees 0.2 inches of snow in the month of September.       

In Pueblo, the average high temperature and low temperature of 88 degrees and 56 degrees on on September 1st, cools to 77 degrees and 43 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of September in Pueblo is 66.6 degrees. On average, Pueblo sees 0.2 inches of snow in September.
