Excessive Rainfall and Severe Thunderstorms Threaten the Southern U.S. Again Friday

Heavy to excessive rainfall is forecast for eastern Louisiana into central Alabama which could bring flash, urban, and riverine flooding Friday. April of 2024 saw a mainly westerly flow pattern across Rockies, bringing periods of warm, dry and windy weather to south central and southeast Colorado. This pattern also brought increased fire danger days to much of the snow free areas across the region. Two weather systems moved across eastern Colorado towards the end of the month, bringing widespread rain and higher elevation snow to portions of the eastern mountains and plains. For the month of April as a whole, at or above normal temperatures and at and below normal precipitation were experienced across the region, with above normal precipitation being realized across the Pikes Peak region.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of April was 43.7 degrees. This is 1.1 degrees above normal and makes April of 2024 the 21st warmest April on record in Alamosa. This remains well behind the warmest April of 1946, when the average April temperature was  47.3 degrees. The average April maximum temperature in Alamosa was 63.5 degrees, which is 3.3 degrees above normal. The average April minimum temperature in Alamosa was 23.9 degrees, which is 1.1 degrees below normal.  Alamosa recorded 0.09 inches of precipitation through the month of April. This is 0.48 inches below normal and makes April of 2024 tied as the 7th driest April on record.  Alamosa recorded a trace of snow through the month of a April. This is 3.5 inches below normal and makes April of 2024 tied as the 6th least snowiest April on record. The 2023-24 seasonal snowfall tally in Alamosa remains at 28.0 inches, which is 0.9 inches above normal to date.       

 

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of April was 50.2 degrees. This is 2.7 degrees above normal and makes April of 2024 the 13th warmest on record in Colorado Springs. This remains well behind the warmest April of 1981 when the average April temperature was 53.8 degrees. The average April maximum temperature in Colorado Springs was 63.8 degrees, which is 2.8 degrees above normal. The average April minimum temperature in Colorado Springs was 36.6 degrees, which is 2.6 degrees above normal.  Colorado Springs recorded 1.52 inches of precipitation through the month of April, which is 0.07 inches above normal.  Colorado Springs tallied 0.6 inches of snow through the month of April, which is 4.9 inches below normal. The 2023-24 seasonal snowfall tally in Colorado Springs is 50.6 inches, which is 18.7 inches above normal to date.       

 

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the past month of April was 53.9 degrees. This is 2.5 degrees above normal and makes April of 2024 tied is the 16th warmest April on record in Pueblo. This remains well behind the warmest April of 1981, when the average April temperature was 59.6 degrees. The average April maximum temperature in Pueblo was 70.2 degrees, which is 2.9 degrees above normal. The average April minimum temperature in Pueblo was 37.5 degrees, which is 2.2 degrees above normal. Pueblo recorded 1.07 inches of precipitation through the month of April, which is  0.50 inches below normal. Pueblo tallied a trace of snow through the month of April, which is 3.4 inches below normal.  The 2023-24 seasonal snowfall tally in Pueblo is 22.2 inches, which is 6.1 inches below normal to date.    

 

Looking ahead into May in Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 64 degrees and 30 degrees on May 1st, warm to 76 degrees and 37 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of May in Alamosa is 51.7 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.60 inches of precipitation and 0.8 inches of snow through the month of May.       

In Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperature of 65 degrees and 38 degrees on May 1st, warm to 77 degrees and 48 degrees by the end  of the month. The average temperature for the month of May in Colorado Springs is 57.1 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 1.99 inches of precipitation and 0.6 inches of snow through the month of May.         

In Pueblo, the average high temperature and low temperature of 71 degrees and 40 degrees on May 1st, warm to 83 degrees and 51 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of May in Pueblo is 61.4 degrees. Pueblo averages 1.57 inches of precipitation and 0.0 inches of snow through the month of May.
