March Weather Review

March of 2026 started out unsettled, with a few passing weather systems bringing some precipitation to the state, especially across areas over and near the higher terrain. However, a strong upper level high pressure system moved into the region for the middle to end of the month, bringing record shattering heat which quickly depleted the record low snowpack across the state.  Many if not all weather reporting sites across south central and southeast Colorado set daily and monthly heat records, including the preliminary high temperature of 98 degrees in Springfield, Colorado (KSPD) on March 26th setting a new state record high temperature for the month of March, surpassing the previous March record of 96F in Holly, Colorado on March 13th of 1907. For the month as a whole, well above normal temperatures and well below normal precipitation were  experienced across south central and southeast Colorado, save for pockets at and above normal precipitation across the Pikes Peak region.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of March was 43.8 degrees. This is 8.6 degrees above normal and makes March of 2026 the warmest March on record In Alamosa, crushing the previous warmest March of 2017,  when the average temperature was 40.9 degrees. The average March maximum temperature in Alamosa was 66.6 degrees, which is 13.9 degrees above normal.  The average March minimum temperature in Alamosa was 20.9 degrees, which is 3.3 degrees above normal.  Alamosa recorded a trace of precipitation through the month of March. This is 0.54 inches below normal and makes March of 2026 tied with March of 1955 as the driest March on record.  The high temperature reached 80F or greater twice in the month of March. This has never happened before, with the previous earliest 80F temperature on record being April 20th, of 1989. Alamosa set or tied 15 record high temperatures in the month of March, including the highest March temperature on record of 83F on the 21st.   (ALS POR: 1932-2026)    

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of March was 50.9 degrees. This is 9.8F above normal and makes March of 2026 the warmest March on record, crushing the previous warmest March of 2012 when the average temperature was  48.0F.  The average March maximum temperature in Colorado Springs was 66.1 degrees, which is 11.2 degrees above normal. The average March minimum temperature in Colorado Springs was 35.7 degrees, which is 8.4 degrees above normal. Colorado Springs recorded 1.03 inches of precipitation throughout the month of March. This is 0.24 inches above normal and makes March of 2026 tied as 35th wettest March on record. Colorado Springs saw 3.0 inches of snow in the month of March. This is 2.7 inches below normal and makes March of 2026 tied as the 32nd least snowiest March on record.  The temperature topped out at 80F or greater six times throughout March of 2026 in Colorado Springs. In the previous 131 years of records, the temperature reached 80F only six other times in the month of March in Colorado Springs (2X 2017, 1X 2022, 1X 2015, 1X 1971, 1X 2963).  Colorado Springs set or tied 8 record high temperatures in March, including the warmest March temperature on record of 86F on the 21st, as well as one daily record precipitation on March 3rd, when 0.74 inches was recorded. (COS POR: 1895-2026)    

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the past month of February was 53.2 degrees. This is 9.3 degrees above normal and makes March of 2026 the warmest on record, besting the previous warmest March of 1910, when the average temperature was 51.3F. The average March maximum temperature in Pueblo was 72.4 degrees, which is 11.8 degrees above normal. The average March minimum temperature in Pueblo was 34.0 degrees, which is 6.9 degrees above normal. Pueblo recorded 0.88 inches of precipitation throughout March. This is 0.06 inches above normal and makes March of 2026 tied as the 44th wettest March on record. Pueblo recorded a trace of snow in March, which is 4.5 inches below normal. The high temperature reached 90F or greater 3 times in March of 2026 in Pueblo. This has never happened before, with the previous earliest 90F temperature on record in Pueblo being April 6th, of 1991. Pueblo set or tied 8 record high temperatures in the month of March, including the highest March temperature on record of 93F on the 21st, as well as one daily record precipitation on March 3rd, when 0.73 inches was recorded.  (PUB POR: 1888-2026)  

Looking ahead into April in Alamosa, the average high and low temperatures of 57 degrees and 21 degrees on April 1st, warm to 64 degrees and 29 degrees by the end of the month.  The average temperature for the month of April in Alamosa is 42.6 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.57 inches of precipitation and 3.5 inches of snow through the month of April.             

In Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperatures of 59 degrees and 31 degrees on April1st, warm to 65 degrees and 38 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of April in Colorado Springs is 47.5 degrees.  Colorado Springs averages 1.45 inches of precipitation and 5.5 inches of snow through the month of April.  On average, April is the 2nd snowiest month of the year in Colorado Springs.         

In Pueblo, the average high and low temperatures of 65 degrees and 31 degrees on April1st, warm to 71 degrees and 40 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of April in Pueblo is 51.3 degrees. Pueblo averages 1.57 inches of precipitation and 3.4 inches of snow through the month of April.   On average, April 29th is the date of the last freeze of the seasonal in Pueblo.
